December 7 marks the 72nd anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Unsuspecting men and women both civilian and in service lost their lives or were injured in a surprise air attack. (I will always remember this date because it is also my sister’s birthday). And just 2 day ago, Nelson Mandela passed away at the age of 95. A man who brought peace to a country marred by apartheid, who spent 27 YEARS in prison because he would not compromise his beliefs. Ultimately, he would become President of South Africa and one of the most respected statesmen that ever lived.
From an event that launched the United States into war to the death of a champion of reconciliation, we are reminded how fleeting PEACE truly is. Today more than ever we need to be ambassadors of peace. To carry on the legacies of the fallen and to honor their memories. So how should we do that? I think the lyrics of “Let There Be Peace on Earth” tell us exactly how:
Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth
The peace that was meant to be.
With God as our father
Brothers all are we.
Let me walk with my brother
In perfect harmony.Let peace begin with me
Let this be the moment now.
With every step I take
Let this be my solemn vow.
To take each moment
And live each moment
With peace eternally.
Let there be peace on earth,
And let it begin with me.
