When I was in law school, we studied for exams by studying outlines of all the materials. The old school word for an outline was “the skinny.” (I know this because my Dad is a lawyer, too.) The skinny means the details or the lowdown on a subject. Getting the skinny means you really knew about it and grasp it. So I’d like to share the skinny on Beautycounter with you.
Have you had that moment where you found out something and you simply had to share it with everyone you know? Learning about Beautycounter has been that moment for me. If yo read nothing more than the next paragraph or two, then get this:
Can you believe it? Neither could I!
So it’s no surprise that the US also falls woefully short when compared to the European Union:
On average, American woman put between 12 and 20 chemicals on their skin. Who knew the bathroom could be the most dangerous room in your house! When you factor in shampoo, soap, lotion, cosmetics, it’s easy to get to 12.
Your skin is your largest organ, absorbing up to 60 percent of what you put on it. But even more shocking is the fact that 80 percent of the ingredients that are used in daily personal care products have never been tested for safety.
I always wondered why we keep more hearing about cancer, endocrine and reproductive problems. Especially when I was diagnosed with a thyroid issue between the birth of my kids. Could what I’ve been putting on be causing my endocrine issues?
And that’s where this quote comes in:
Like knowing I need to drink more water. Exercise more. Now I KNOW I need to pay attention to all my products I put on and around me and my family.
Why Beautycounter?
The Beautycounter mission is all about getting safer products in the hands of everyone. Yes, everyone: men, women, kids, babies. It includes makeup, skin care, sunscreen, oil, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.
Decades of studies indicate that serious health issues (including, but not limited to asthma, learning disabilities, cancer and infertility) are on the rise, and due in some part to our ongoing exposure to toxic chemicals—whether it’s in the shower, on our commute, while we eat lunch at a local restaurant, or when we clean our kitchens at home.
At Beautycounter, we’ve banned more than 1,500 ingredients setting a new health and safety standard— all while ensuring our products perform, and that they’re as indulgent as any luxe shampoo, lipstick or oil in the market. It’s not easy work, but it’s well worth it.
This is about progress—not perfection. Because every little bit counts.
– Beautycounter
Those 1,500 ingredients are what we call “The Never List.” As in, they will NEVER be found in Beautycounter products. Some you may have heard of like parabens and phthalates. Until I started looking at my personal care products and not being able to pronounce half the ingredients did it dawn on me what I have been exposing myself to.
Your skin is your largest organ, and it only takes 26 seconds for what comes into contact with it to enter your bloodstream. Yep-no joke.
Here’s an activity for you to try at home: check how safe your own products are at www.ewg.org/skindeep/. This website is an amazing database where you can research products and specific ingredients to learn whether they are safe.
Let’s take one example: fragrance. It’s everywhere. It sounds harmless, but it’s actually one word used to describe thousands of harmful ingredients that are hormone disruptors, allergens, toxic to our organs and the endocrine system. (Hello, that got my attention.) Here’ the kicker: the law does not require companies to disclose what makes up their “fragrance.” Many toxic chemicals can be combined under the umbrella of “fragrance/parfum/flavor.”
Why Me?
I’ve been a loyal Beautycounter customer for over a year now, and I’ve decided to take the plunge and become a consultant. Here is my WHY and here’s WHY I’d love for you to join in this movement for safer beauty.
Starting a new business is always exciting, a bit nerve-wracking and adrenaline-inducing. Taking the leap to become a Beautycounter consultant has been all of those and then some. The beauty of Beautycounter? A network of likeminded, passionate people who care more about education and being change agents as making sales.
I love working for a company that is about education and advocacy. Let’s face it, we take action for things we believe in. What moves us MOVES us. As in lights a fire under us. We support the causes that are near and dear to our hearts. Nothing could get more nearer and dearer to me than my family and my friends and their families.
I became an attorney because I have the audacious idea that I could help people. Believing that my little voice, my skills, my education could help me benefit others. Well, here I go again. I love that this is another opportunity to help others.
Here’s my why
Like so many of you, my family is my world. They are why I work hard and chase dreams. They make me want to be better and do better every day.
I know your families are just as precious to you. That’s why I’d love for you to take what you’ve learned and put it into practice.
Whether you try Beautycounter (which I would love) or not, check your products. Pay attention to labels. Ask questions. Because now we KNOW better.

The lip sheers are one of my favorites! I love how they feel and look. And no lead! I’m amazed that companies would think that lead is an OK ingredient to have in makeup.
